BLAINE, Minn. – (Sept. 17, 2015) – An opportunity to teach fire safety in a fun fashion is coming up for the SBM Fire Department at their annual open houses. “We will be hosting open houses at each of our four volunteer fire stations. The fire department open houses are a chance for the public to come out and see what were all about. Check out the trucks, check out the equipment, talk to firefighters, find out ways they can stay safe in their daily lives in their home, when they’re our and about. We have different activities,” said community risk reduction bureau chief Connie Forster.
The activities are different at each of the four fire stations and include demonstrations in kitchen fire safety, electrical safety, outdoor fire pit safety, driving safety, and simulated fires. This gives firefighters a way to interact with the community in a non-emergency situation. “It’s important for the fire department to meet the people we save on a better day if you will. Sometimes we meet our customers on one of the worst days of their life. It’s when they need us when they call 911 so its a chance for us to interact with them on a more positive level as well as teaching them things they can do to stay safe, prevention methods. So hopefully we never meet them on that bad worst day of their life,” said Forster.
The open house events begin on September 26th. They are free and open to the public. Hundreds of people come out to the event and the firefighters like to show off what they do. “We like to meet people, we like to show off our equipment, we like to show off our buildings. We tell them who we are and what were all about. It’s just a very positive experience for the fire department members as well as the public,” said Forster.
