ST. PAUL, Minn. – (Feb. 18, 2016) – On Tuesday, March 1 beginning at 7 p.m., the 2016 presidential election will officially kick off in Minnesota. Both the DFL and Republican parties will be holding their precinct caucuses that night.
A precinct caucus is basically a meeting hosted by the political party with the purpose of electing delegates for larger political meetings, endorsing candidates for office, and discussing issues pertaining to the party platform. The political parties will submit the results of the caucus to the Secretary of State.
For the first time results for both parties will be binding, and delegates to the national convention will be selected based on caucus votes. With the binding caucus vote and the wide open race for President turnout is expected to be higher than normal.
