“We’ve been doing this since 1992,” said Print Central owner Gregg Kroll. “[We’ve] never had the same message up there twice. You’d have to do that math, but that’s a lot of messages.”
Gregg Kroll is the man behind the sign. He opened Print Central in 1983, and moved the business to its current location in 1992. When he moved, he says he had a decision to make.
“I said, ‘well, am I going to advertise printing, or am I going to send a message and have somebody have fun on the way home from a stressful day at work?’ And, I decided to do this,” said Kroll.
He changes the sign every two weeks or so, depending on the weather, and has just a few rules for what can go on the sign. He’s never put an ad on the sign, and he never posts political or religious messages.
Gregg says he gets ideas for the sign for all over, and takes notes for future ideas. He even gets ideas submitted to him by fans.
After the sayings have been on the sign, he tries to keep them in the back of his mind for the right occasion.
“I remember a lot of the ones I put up there, and maybe for the next couple of weeks I’ll use it in conversation,” said Kroll.
And while he’s having fun with it, he also hopes to leave an impact on future customers.
“It could be any one of these businesses along Highway 65,” said Kroll. “Hopefully people notice the sign and remember that Print Central is tied to it.”
