According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the number of homes being mitigated for radon has more than doubled in two years. The Minnesota Radon Awareness Act is a law that took effect at the beginning of 2014, requiring more detailed radon information to be provided before a home is sold. Sellers need to say if the house has been tested for radon and warn the buyer if it hasn’t. Over 3,000 homes were mitigated for radon in 2015 in Minnesota. Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that occurs naturally in the soil, and long-term exposure can lead to lung cancer and other health problems. Nearly two in five homes still have dangerous levels of radon and it is recommended every house be tested. Test kits can be found at city and county health departments, hardware stores, and radon testing labs. Tests are inexpensive, and only takes a few days to complete.
