BLAINE, Minn. – (Dec. 14, 2017) – In Minnesota, 1 in 3 third graders struggles to read at grade level. To help address this problem, AmeriCorps Minnesota is hiring more Reading Corps tutors. In order to open up this opportunity to more people a new position has been created to allow people that cannot commit full time to still help as tutors.
“Whether you have recently graduated from high school, or you’ve recently retired, whether you’re looking to make a career change or you’re currently in college, the position is a three day a week position, and so for just three days a week you too can have an impact on these children’s lives,” said Reading Corps Senior Program Manager, Julia Quanrud.
Reading tutors are paid, offered health insurance and may receive an education award that can be used towards future tuition or student loan payments.
You may also transfer the education award to a child or grandchild. Tutors receive training and ongoing coaching for program leaders. This program has been well received by students and educators.
“As a past school board member, legislator and commissioner of education, I’ve seen a lot of programs come and go in Minnesota and the one program that I think has been hugely successful is the Minnesota Reading Corp,” said former Minnesota Education Commissioner Alicee Seagren.
The program is specifically looking for more tutors in the north metro area that would be able to start in January.
“We need more and more tutors to meet the demand of the Minnesota Reading Corps and that’s why we’re here today,” Seagren said. “We are creating this three day position that would give some flexibility to people who want to participate.”
