Just call it the “great salsa showdown” – a charity event taking place at Mrs. Taco in Andover between Vanessa Medina and Mike Waldron.
“I think my salsa is way better,” said Vanessa, who co-owns Mrs. Taco. “But I give him the credit for trying. Yes, his salsa is almost as good as mine.”
In one bowl is Vanessa’s special Central American salsa.
“I work with food from Guatemala, Salvador and Mexico, Vanessa said.
In another bowl, is Mike’s homemade salsa.
“It’s a blind test,” Vanessa said. “There is salsa 1 which is green and salsa 2 which is a red. You get to try it and then you go to the web page and select which salsa is your favorite.”
Salsa sampling for two good causes
This salsa smackdown is being done to raise money for charity and the contest runs through Sunday October 22nd.
“Our goal is $3,000,” Vanessa said.
Money raised goes to Mike’s 23rd Veterans charity and for Vanessa’s passion to stop human trafficking.
“It’s for a great cause,” Vanessa said. “It’s to help battling with trauma and human trafficking – which believe it or not, nowadays still happens.”
“Excellent cause,” said Long Doan of Blaine, who participated in the taste test. “Love that it supports a local marine and the local business owner. We’re all small business owners ourselves, so we really want to support small business owners.”
Salsa samplers who go to Mrs. Taco donate $5 dollars to the cause so they can taste and compare. The money raised will be split between the two charities.
“I think the green salsa is number 1,” said Nate from Andover. “The flavor and it’s got a little bit of spice.”
“Number 1 has more heat,” Doan said. “But number 2 tastes better to me. I like that taste better.”
Simple and tasty job.
This is a simple and tasty job for the salsa samplers. Just dip a chip and decide which salsa is superior.
This is the kind of taste test everyone can enjoy and is a win-win event.
“I like the red one better,” said one participant. “This feels like MasterChef and were voting.”
“Good,” said Nate as he continued eating chips and salsa. “Very good.”
Said Doan: “We might need more chips.”
“He claims his salsa is better than mine,” Vanessa said. “I had to prove him wrong.”
