SCHOOL BUS COMPANIES APPLYING FOR MILLIONS IN GRANTS TO PAY FOR STOP-ARM SAFETY CAMERAS

(ST. PAUL – April 12, 2022) – School bus companies across Minnesota are able to be reimbursed for the cost of outfitting their fleet with stop-arm safety cameras, meant to ultimately cut down on what state safety officials say is a growing problem of people driving around stopped school buses when kids are getting on or off.

According to the Department of Public Safety, officers have cited more than 4,600 drivers for stop-arm violations since 2017.

“Driving around a school bus stop arm that is extended is one of very few offenses in Minnesota that a peace officer can actually take enforcement action on not having witnessed it personally,” said DPS Director of Traffic Safety Michael Hanson. “We know one of the most effective ways to get people to change their behavior is to provide a consequence. If people know the likelihood of facing that consequence is out there, they’re much more likely to be compliant with the law.”

Lawmakers in St. Paul last year earmarked more than $14 million for grants, which DPS is doling out in three phases. In the first phase, announced in February, more than 30 companies statewide–including Rehbein Transit in Lino Lakes, which services Centennial Schools–got more than $3 million in total grants to reimburse for costs of camera systems.

The cameras take pictures of license plates, much like red light traffic cameras.

The second phase of applicants that will get the grants should be announced soon. Hanson said they saw many more applicants after the first wave was announced. The second half of the funding will be released from the state this summer, he said.

“No child should be afraid getting on and off that bus,” said Hanson. “We shouldn’t need laws and all of this extra equipment for people to do the right thing.”
