ANOKA COUNTY, Minn. – It may seem like spring storms, tornados and thunderstorms are a long ways off, even though there were some thunder claps mixed in with this week’s snow. However, Minnesota is entering Severe Weather Awareness Week.
It’s a partnership with the National Weather Service that is designed to teach and remind Minnesotans about weather hazards and the risks associated with severe weather. There will be two statewide tornado dills on Thursday, April 18th. The first will be at 1:45 pm for businesses and schools to practice their safety procedures, and the second at 6:55 pm for second shift workers and families.
According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota has an average of 40 tornadoes per year. Last year, 37 touched down. In 2010, we set a record with 104 tornadoes throughout the state.
