BLAINE, Minn. (12/2/2022) – When the snow falls – the city of Blaine springs into action.
Blaine has plenty of ways to keep the city moving through a snowstorm. Blaine has over 4,000 tons of salt to apply to roads and that was put to use earlier this week.
“We’re well prepared to take care of a storm event like this,” said Nick Fleischacker of the Blaine Public Works department.
Blaine has 16 gigantic truck plows and many other small ones. On Tuesday the fleet took to the streets, clearing snow, so transportation in the city would not be crippled.
“We’re fortunate to have a really good staff here that really takes pride in the work that they do – especially during snow events,” Fleischacker said. “That’s what we’re here for in the winter.”
GIVE PLOWS SPACE
Crews put in long hours to get the job done. Their mission is to clear all of Blaine’s 600 lane miles of streets – which is like driving to Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.
Said Fleischacker : “Our county roads – MnDOT and the county – take care of, but we take care of all those collector roads and side streets and stuff like that.”
When driving in snowy and icy conditions, it’s always smart to give plows plenty of space.
“They are very heavy and a very dangerous thing to run into or get hit by,” Fleischacker said. “Our message is to stay away and get back.”
In Blaine you can’t park overnight in the winter and street parking is not allowed when there is over two inches of snow.
