One hundred twenty students in the kindergarten class will make the move, and about eighty kindergarteners will stay at Sunrise. The school district also considered moving the 5th grade class to Roosevelt Middle School a year early, but ultimately decided that the kindergarten plan limited student transitions.
“For all families, they don’t want to have their student to go through multiple transitions. As we look at our fifth grade students, all of them have transitioned to us from some place when we opened,” said Sunrise Elementary Principal Deb Shepard. “These students have also had mulitple transitions just due to the pandemic.”
The district is still finalizing exactly which students and which neighborhoods of students will move to Johnsville. The final boundaries will be confirmed in time for kindergarten registration.
This will be a one-year shift for the students. Beginning in the fall, the school district will look at the boundaries for all of the district’s elementary schools, with the goal of having new boundaries in place by the fall of 2023.
