SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. – (April 9, 2020) – At this week’s council meeting, a meeting held on Zoom, the Spring Lake Park City Council took a vote to cancel this year’s Tower Days.
“However this year, given the circumstances, we feel like the best way to protect the community is to cancel the 2020 Tower Days Festivals.” said Kay Okey, SLP Parks and Recreation Director. “Several factors have led us to this difficult decision. Number 1 is the projections from the Minnesota Department of Health about when the state of Minnesota will be at the height of the pandemic – which will be in June, is there current projections.”
Other factors presented to the council included, the police reserves being temporarily disbanded and having received no donations from the Spring Lake Park Lions for the festival. The Lions revenue has been reduced due to the lack of charitable gambling in restaurants and bars. The council expressed regret in having to take the vote.
“Guess what I don’t like guys? But I understand.” Bob Nelson, SLP Mayor.
“We don’t like it either,” said SLP city administrator Dan Buchholtz.
But ultimately the council voted unanimously to cancel this year’s celebration.
