It also lists seven specific high-traffic intersections where it will be illegal to stay on the median through two consecutive opportunities to cross the highway. Those include: University Avenue and Osborne Road, University Avenue and 81st Avenue, Highway 65 and Osborne Road, Highway 65 and 81st Avenue, Highway 65 and 85th Avenue, County Highway 10 and Able Street, and County Highway 10 and Pleasant View Drive.
The ordinance also makes it illegal for a motorist to respond to someone, like a panhandler, who is on the median illegally.
City officials say the increase in the number of pedestrians occupying medians at the city’s busiest intersections creates a dangerous situation for both pedestrians and drivers.
“This is a safety issue,” said Mayor Bob Nelson. “There’s been a number of issues throughout both our city and surrounding cities, and we’re all tackling this and taking it on.”
Police will take steps to educate pedestrians and drivers about the ordinance before e
