SPRING LAKE PARK PASSES ORDINANCE TARGETING MEDIAN SAFETY

(SPRING LAKE PARK) – Spring Lake Park has passed an ordinance to keep people from spending long periods of time on medians at busy intersections.  The new rule applies to busy highways like University Avenue and Highway 65 where pedestrian accidents are more than double the state average.

It also lists seven specific high-traffic intersections where it will be illegal to stay on the median through two consecutive opportunities to cross the highway. Those include: University Avenue and Osborne Road, University Avenue and 81st Avenue, Highway 65 and Osborne Road, Highway 65 and 81st Avenue, Highway 65 and 85th Avenue, County Highway 10 and Able Street, and County Highway 10 and Pleasant View Drive.

The ordinance also makes it illegal for a motorist to respond to someone, like a panhandler, who is on the median illegally.

Police will take steps to educate pedestrians and drivers about the ordinance before e
