“It was really a great day for the school district. We are really excited about the support from the community and really thank the community for doing what they did, understanding the need that we had and then coming out and voting in such a powerful way in supporting our school district,” said Spring Lake Park Schools director of communications Bob Noyed.
“We will get the bond sold, then we will dive into the planning phases, we will form teams of staff and parents to design the new school but also some of the other spaces that we talked about. We’ll have teams of people involved in that process. We also continue to look for the land for the new school and we hope to lock that in here in the next few months,” said Noyed.
The district is negotiating with three different land owners. One property is at the corner of 109th and Lexington Avenues, another is owned by the National Sports Center near 105th and Davenport and a third property is owned by the Metropolitan Airports Commission near 85th Avenue and Highway 10. When the new school is completed the district will also reconfigure its grade level structure.
“The fall of 2018, that’s when the new K-4 school opens and when the new school opens Park Terrace and Northpoint become K-4’s and Westwood becomes 5-A.
With the passage of the bond the district believes that are prepared to meet the projected enrollment growth for the foreseeable future.
“For the next ten years we are pretty confident we’re going to have enough space,” said Noyed.
This was the first bond referendum in the Spring Lake Park district since 2006.
