(City of Blaine Press Release) – On Tuesday, May 28, in Sherburne County District Court, Callison Mae Olson, 18, was sentenced for the death of Steve Nanney and Susie Nanney. Olson was initially charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving. After much consultation with Steve and Susie’s families an agreement was reached to dismiss one count of criminal vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving. As a part of the agreement Olson plead guilty to the remaining count of criminal vehicular homicide and the sentenced was stayed.
Blaine Police Chief Brian Podany was able to give a victim impact statement at the sentencing hearing and many members of the Blaine Police Department attended the hearing.
Steve Nanney was a member of the Blaine Police Department for 10 years and was killed along with his wife Susie, a professor at the University of Minnesota, when their motorcycle was hit head on by a pickup truck driven by Olson. The investigation determined that Olson was distracted by her cell phone at the time of the crash.
The Blaine Police Department would like to thank the community for the outpouring of support the department has received over the last year since the loss of Steve and Susie.
She pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving, and received a stay on the charge of criminal vehicular homicide.
Investigators say cell phone records show Olson was sending and receiving text messages when she veered into oncoming traffic and hit the Nanneys’ motorcycle.
According to the plea agreement, Olson will serve 60 days in jail, three years’ probation, and she is required to complete 25 public speaking engagements about the dangers of distracted driving.
