LINO LAKES, Minn. – (July 7, 2016) – The Centennial School District in Anoka County is looking for math and reading tutors for the 2016-2017 school year to help students who are falling behind on proficiency levels. A total of 13 tutors will be hired through the AmeriCorps Reading and Math Corps program and will be helping students at all grade levels. The program aims to improve some Minnesota statistics that show too many children are not up to speed on skills for their grade level.
One-third of third graders can’t read at a third grade level and 40% of eighth graders struggle to perform basic math. The program began in 2008 and serves about 30,000 students a year. Schools that are involved include Golden Lake, Centennial, Rice Lake, and Centerville elementary schools. More information on requirements and expectations of tutors can be found here.
