“We do math, readin,g and then we have like our morning meeting. In the beginning of the day and we have our specials, and we have lunch, and it’s a good day,” explained third grader Mazie Taylor.
But recently, these students got to deliver some very big news to the other students and the staff. The news was that their school was named one of the 24 best in country. The magnet focus here is aerospace, children’s engineering, and science.
“My favorite part is learning about space,” said third grader Jayda Adbuya.
“It is lucky that we get to learn about space and science because it’s really fun to learn about,” said Rachel Idowa.
Each grade focuses on a different project and right now these third graders are studying the planets.
“What I like best about Saturn is that it has beautiful rings,” said Jayda.
“Venus has yellow clouds and has 1,600 major volcanoes,” said Rachel.
Beyond the magnet focus, the school also focuses on creating habits and responsibility through its Leader in Me program.
“I wouldn’t say that we gauge our success just by test scores,” said Principal Diedre Bloemers.
But, she said, it’s about creating opportunities for learning and growth.
“Anytime you give a student an opportunity to feel valued and heard it’s amazing what can happen,” said Bloemers.
More than 20 percent of the students here come from outside the traditional boundaries to be part of this award-winning magnet program.
