BLAINE, Minn. – The control tower at the Anoka County Blaine Airport got a bit of a reprieve this week. The Federal Aviation Administration had included the tower in its list of 149 towers nationwide to be closed due to budget cuts, but this week the closure was pushed back until June 15. The tower was originally scheduled to close in early May.
Several other cities are looking at possibly funding the towers themselves causing the FAA to delay all closing while those details are worked out. The Metropolitan Airports Commission which operates the Anoka County Blaine Airport has indicated that they have no plans to fund control tower operations at this time. The airport will remain open after the tower closure and coordination of takeoffs and landings will by up to the pilots using the airport.
