BLAINE, Minn. – (Nov. 21, 2013) – On Nov. 8 officials from Wal-Mart officially submitted an application to the City of Blaine to build a new 183,000 square foot store near the interchange of I-35W and Lexington Road. This store would replace the Wal-Mart in Blaine’s Village development.
Wal-Mart wants to move out of the village because of a restriction in their lease. Currently they are not allowed to sell groceries at the location in The Village, but a new store would have that ability.
Some residents of have been opposed to this project ever since the first rumors two years ago that Wal-Mart was planning a move.
Now, that a formal application has been submitted the city will be holding open houses and hearings on the project. First, a neighborhood open house will be held on Dec. 3 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at city hall. Second, the planning commission will hold a public hearing on the project at 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 10.
The project will first appear before the city council on Jan. 16. The city council has to act on the application within 120 days of its submission meaning the latest the council could act would be early March.
