ANOKA, Minn. – (Sept. 11, 2015) – A new phone scam is popping up across the north metro area.
The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office says that a person or group is posing as a sheriff’s deputy and claiming that the people they call are behind on their taxes and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller says they can avoid jail time by making an immediate payment to the IRS. They direct people to purchase a prepaid visa card.
The Anoka County Sheriff’s Department is not making these calls and never collects IRS debt, and no law enforcement agencies will demand payment over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, you are encouraged to hang up and call your local law enforcement agency right away.
