BLAINE, Minn. – (March 29, 2018) – With signature creations such as the Cookie Monster, S’Mores and Bears and Sour Tang Wonders Ice Cream was an instant hit when they first opened last year in St. Paul with their rolled ice cream. Wonders was the first rolled ice cream shop in Minnesota. Others quickly followed by they were the original. But the Wonders story started a few years earlier and in another state.
“I saw rolled ice cream on Facebook…I was living in Chicago at the time,” said Wonders Ice Cream Co. co-founder Joungkong Yang.
But JK had no experience making ice cream so he turned his apartment into a rolled ice cream lab.
“I went to school for web design…I didn’t know how to make ice cream. My partner and I did a bunch of research and we basically learned how to make ice cream in my Chicago apartment,” said Yang.
Now after much success at their first location in St. Paul Wonders has picked Blaine for its second location.
“I actually grew up in Blaine and went to high school here so I thought it was an awesome opportunity to bring something awesome to my hometown,” said Yang.
JK describes first time customers as memorized when they see their ice cream take shape.
“My partner and I always say we are the hibachi of ice cream,” said Yang.
A third location in Maple Grove will open soon. And if the crowds at the Blaine grand opening are any indication Wonders will continue to draw big crowds.
“We had no idea we would get so many people to come through our doors,” said Yang.
Wonders Ice Cream is open every day and stays open late on the weekend, serving ice cream until Midnight on Friday and Saturday.
