The Compassion Action Network put together a forum with Anoka County, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, and the Heading Home Anoka Housing Collaborative, to talk about the realities of homeless.
ANOKA COUNTY COUNTS THOSE WITHOUT A ROOF
This week, volunteers spent a day walking around the county looking for people who are homeless, as a part of the national Point in Time Unsheltered Survey.
VETERANS HOUSING NOW OPEN IN ANOKA
In just 57 days this run down, abandoned building was transformed into a welcoming safe place for homeless veterans. Initial estimates indicated that the building would cost more than $4 million to restore, but with an all volunteer crew and donated items they building was given new life for only $350,000.
Giving Veterans a Place to Call Home
The latest research shows the average homeless veteran is 51 years old and the majority have been without a home for more than a year. A rapidly growing group of local citizens are working hard to get homeless vets off the streets before winter begins.
Hope 4 Youth Celebrates Successes
Hope 4 Youth has a drop in center, that provided basic needs to 732 different homeless youth in 2016.
Helping Homeless Youth
On any given night, more than 4,000 young people in Minnesota are homeless. Hope 4 Youth is one of the resources available for local young people who are experiencing homelessness. In 2015, their drop-in center was visited more than 8,000 times. More than 5,000 meals were eaten at the center, and their food pantry was visited nearly 6,000 times.
