Thor: The Dark World

ben inside 210A Film Review by: Ben Hayle, NMTV

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with the release of Thor: The Dark World. We find Thor (Chris Hemsworth) back on Asgard leading his fellow Asgardians in a battle to restore order and peace to the Nine Realms. After the completion of the two year war, Thor returns to Earth after Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) goes missing. The Asgardians discover that a rare alignment of the Nine Realms called the Convergence is about to happen and that the borders between the realms are becoming blurred allowing people and objects to move between the realms. At the same time an enemy long thought vanished returns to battle Thor for control of the galaxy. Thor is forced to seek help from his dangerous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who was imprisoned after the battle of New York. With an enemy he must defeat and an ally he can’t trust Thor will be put to the test as he tries to save the galaxy and his love.

Thor: The Dark World is another home run for the fine folks at Marvel. This film is a fantastic adventure and takes the audience on a wonderful thrill ride for two hours. The special effects are top notch, which is what you should expect from this franchise. The 3D element does not add much to this film and is not worth the extra money when you visit the theatre.

Chris Hemsworth has really come in to his own playing this character. He is charismatic, warm, funny, and still manages to retain the godlike arrogance of Thor. He has really grown into this role and his performance is much better than in the first Thor film. The rest of the cast including Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Stellan Skarsgard match Hemsworth in turning in really good performances. The good acting is in part due to the funny and engaging story. The screen writers do a great job of creating a story that showcases the power of Thor through the action sequences but also blends in humor and dramatic relationships.

Thor: The Dark World is a welcomed addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both serious and casual fans of the franchise will be entertained.

4 out of 5 stars.
