The candidates on the ballot for District 6 are:
About: Born in 1961, Tom Emmer grew up in Minnesota and attended Saint Thomas Academy. He received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law. Representing Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District, Tom is currently serving his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives and sits on the Financial Services Committee. As a Member of the Republican Deputy Whip Team, the House Republican Steering Committee, and as the Deputy Chair for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Tom is influential in defending common sense, Midwest values by protecting the Republican majority in Congress. Tom puts the people he represents first, working with both sides of the aisle to solve problems for Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District. In less than two short terms, three of Tom’s bills have become law, making him one of the most effective Members of the sophomore class in Congress. He and his wife Jacquie have been married over 30 years and have seven children. They reside in Delano.
Important Issues: The high cost of healthcare continues to have devastating effects on families and small businesses. I will keep working to bring patient-centered reforms without sacrificing protections for individuals with preexisting conditions or children who want to stay on their parents’ health plans.
Parents and school districts should have local control and extended freedom to provide innovative solutions without having to ask the federal government for permission. I supported legislation to expand the use of 529 Education Savings plans to include costs associated with a child’s elementary and secondary education and pushed for the preservation of the teacher tax deduction.
After years of struggling just to keep up, Minnesotans are finally seeing opportunity, jobs and confidence return. House Republicans have taken the lead to ensure we delivered on our promises. As a result, paychecks are bigger, wages are rising, job openings are at records highs, and unemployment is at record lows.
Goals if Elected: I will continue to prioritize and support efforts to make mental health treatment available for all Minnesotans. This Congress I authored the STRESS Act specifically for our farmers, ranchers and agricultural workers, who suffer from higher rates of depression and suicide than the normal population.
Transportation infrastructure is a crucial component for the future success of the great state of Minnesota and the entire country. I helped secure over two hundred million dollars for two of Minnesota’s major highways including I-94 and have authored legislation to prioritize funding for interchange and intersection safety. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to promote the safety and efficiency of Minnesota’s roads and bridges.
Government spending and debt remain out of control. We need to cut waste, find more reforms, and stick to the “regular order” process of appropriations rather than resort to bloated omnibus bills.

About: Ian Todd grew up in Arkansas in a working class family. After realizing that his family didn’t have the resources to send him to college, he started working. Eventually, he worked his way up to manager at a Subway. Even as a manager, he struggled to make ends meet. This is when he decided to create his own opportunity and join the United States Air Force.
As a member of the U.S. Air Force, Ian Todd was stationed in places such as Germany and Virginia as a Geospatial Intelligence Analyst. It was in the Air Force that he met his wife Denise and his best friend turned campaign manager Ben Carollo. He learned the value of the American Dream, hard work and patriotism while in the Air Force.
He currently seeks political office to continue serving his country during a time of record low veteran politicians.
Important Issues: “The most important issue for my campaign is getting the money out of politics.” Ian Todd wants to fight the corruption that comes from unlimited campaign contributions with a constitutional amendment that overturns Citizens United and reforms our campaign finance system. He also supports Medicare for All and proudly speaks about the economic and humanitarian advantages of single payer. Ian does not deny scientific research and agrees with our military generals that climate change is the greatest threat to our national security. Civil rights is still a battle we must continue to fight, and Ian knows that battle must include all Americans regardless of religion, race, gender, or orientation. Other issues Ian will focus on include human trafficking, fair trade, infrastructure, military spending, criminal justice, education, and many more than can be listed in a limited space.
Goals if Elected: “The goal is to get the voice of the people involved in Washington again. What we’ve been seeing is our Congress becoming increasingly disconnected with the will of the people. Most people are demanding money out of politics, but our elected officials rarely bring it up. Our personal economic situations are dire, but Congress gives tax cuts to the rich despite trickle down’s repeated failure. We can’t afford medical care, people are avoiding the hospital when they need it because we must weigh cost vs. risk, and Congress is currently discussing how best to destroy your Social Security and Medicare. The goal is to change this. The goal is to have our decision makers understand our problems and actually discuss how best to eliminate them. I have full faith in democracy, so the goal is to get everyone to vote from here on out into our bright future.”
